Old-fashioned barbershop celebrates 70th anniversary

Published Friday March 10

All the party-goers echoed that sentiment.

The University Avenue Barbership in Los Gatos is celebrating its seventieth anniversary this year, and although he’s slowed down in recent years, 77-year-old owner Jim Kooper is still cutting hair on Fridays and Saturdays.

“I love all these guys,” Kooper said. “I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to cut hair, so I wanted to thank everybody because they’re so devoted.”

Kooper’s comments came at a March 1 anniversary party at C.B. Hannegan’s that was attended by numerous longtime friends and customers.

“We talk about women,” Robert Hareld joked. “But the accurate reason everybody likes Jim is he knows all their secrets.”
